!!! MORAY OF THE WEEK !!!

Heeheeheeheeheeheeheeheehee!!!! This species is my profile picture on Youtube. Behold the Argus moray (Muraena argus), a gorgeous species with a very pleasing pattern. The lower end of their body reminds me a lot of the patterns on dead sea urchins you find on the beach. I'm a sucker for morays with pretty markings... What an underrated species!

Cool fish & marine sites

MarinelifePhotography.com

This site is great for discovering new species of fish. I often go here and just browse the various sea creature pages... there is one dedicated to moray eels! Every page also has a small paragraph of information regarding the kind of animal, very fun and cool.

Montereybayaquarium.org

What a lovely place! It has lots of information about all sorts of sea creatures you can check out. Even if you can't visit the aquarium, you can learn just as much on the site as you would in person, if not more!

neal.fun/deep-sea

Heeheehee! A great site for if you are bored in class. It just teaches you about different fish and how deep underwater they can be found. Unfourtunately, I do not think it has any moray eel... sigh. Shoutout to Scifislop because I stole it from their site! Glub!

fishbase.se

I don't use this site often BUT it is VERY handy for finding different fish. The search system is nearly flawless. I like trying to find the silliest species names while I browse...

Self explanatory. Let your fish play and eat

"Why do you even like these?"

Moray eels, moray eels… yuck! They really are gross, and putrid, and vile… if you know any other synonyms of grody, might as well add them to the list. Who likes them?

…Is what I would say if I was anyone other than myself. I think.

I don’t remember when I first learnt about moray eels. It was a really long time ago. My interest started in 2022, really kicked off in 2024, and has been thriving ever since. I knew about them much before then, though. There is no point in talking about stuff I don’t remember, so lets return to 2022. If you’re a fan of Nintendo, you may know that this is the year Splatoon 3 came out. Splatoon is SUCH an amazing franchise. It has these little humanoid cephalopods running around with paint guns and gigantic paint rollers in a bustling, urban setting. There's a big art and fashion scene with a big focus on character customization, and a TON of in-game bands with different musical styles. You got rock, chiptune, ska, even a band clearly inspired by celtic shanty music. It is also a very woke franchise, most major characters are women, traditionally feminine or masculine hairstyles are not exclusive to specific genders (the third game doesn’t even ask for your gender in the customization menu), and the main plots of the games explore topics of segregation, classism, even capitalism. Pretty deep stuff for a kids game, no?? Anyway, what does this have to do with eels? It's pretty simple. One of the characters, Frye, is an eel tamer! Like an underwater snake charmer. I still love Splatoon, but over time, it evolved (or devolved?) into just an interest in moray eels. Thanks, Frye!

So, now you know how it happened… but WHY did it happen? What makes eels so awesome that they essentially just replaced one of my biggest interests? There are sooo many reasons, but I think a big one is just that they’re really interesting, but not really known. It hurts to see… or not see, I guess. When people discuss their favourite animals, you’ll hear about cats, dogs, horses, wolves… marine life in general isn’t too popular. If you decide to ask for aquatic animals in specific, you’ll hear about sharks, dolphins, even seals if you’re asking the right group… but eels? No! And that makes me cry big tears :o( I like paying attention to more underappreciated things. I could go on a giant ramble about this, but now isn’t the time. To me, researching a lesser known kind of animal seemed much more appealing because I could teach myself, and eventually others. What a great decision I made! It was so fun learning about morays, and I got equally as much joy spreading the facts I would find. Does this even make sense? I guess eels make me feel smart and niche. And they’re really cute??? Whatever.
